Recital Time Motivation
Rhee Gold
For many
Dance Studio Life readers,
it's recital time--the crazy point of the season. There's
choreography to finish, costumes to be altered--and we all
know that the parents need just a bit more time to pay their
tuition (even those who have owed since January!). But this
is also the time when dance teachers make the kids' dreams
come true, and it's important that we never forget that
part.
For instance, there is little Jessica, the
preschool ballerina, who asks her mom daily, "How many more
weeks before I get to dance onstage?" The funny thing is
that when the day finally arrives, she's so excited to hit
that stage that she forgets the dance and just stands there
with her hands on her hips, rocking side to side with a huge
smile on her face. But that's OK, because her dream came
true anyway!
For a week before the show, Jessica's
grandfather keeps grumbling, "Do I really have to sit
through a dance recital?" But when he sees his granddaughter
on that stage, his complaining stops and this tough old man
begins to cry. As he walks out of the show he proclaims,
"That recital was better than a Broadway show!"
It's not just the little ones whose dreams
we fulfill. Taylor has been at the same school since she was
3 and now she's graduating from high school. Her final
performance and the lifetime she spent in dance will someday
motivate her to enroll her own children in dance lessons. It
just might be at the school where she trained, and her
children will become her teacher's "grand-students."
Despite the craziness
of the season, the costumes
will get altered and most of
the kids
will
learn their choreography--and the ones who don't will look
just great to their adoring parents anyway. Things will be
crazy because that's what the dance-education field is all
about. But don't let yourself get so frazzled that you miss
out on the special moments that are happening all around
you. And remember that it's because you followed your dreams
that all of your students' dreams will come true.
